The sprouts we saved

The story of a woman from Chernihiv region

Both my parents were agronomists. They loved the land deeply — studied it, felt it.

They knew where things would grow well; they knew the secrets of a good harvest.

I inherited their love, and their knowledge. I started my own farm. It’s small, but it was always profitable. The soil here is generous — for fruit and vegetables. Add hard work: my husband and I invested so much time here. That’s why our fruit is always sweet.

When the Russians came to Chernihiv region, so many tanks drove over our land, and there were mines and bombs. There’s still a crater near the apple trees.

After something like that, it’s hard to rejoice in life again. But when everything was cleared and checked — even my husband cried. He couldn’t hold back the tears.

There’s nothing more precious than these shoots, bushes, and leaves of ours. There simply isn’t.
